Location: South Platte River Greenway at the intersection of Santa Fe Blvd and Prince St. - Littleton, Colorado
Date: 1998
Client: HealthOne
HealthOne approached Artscapes to create a living memorial to honor the victims of a 1997 AirLife medical helicopter crash. We used a collaborative approach, and our interviews with surviving friends and family became the primary inspiration for the design of the project. The survivors expressed a consistent need for connecting with loved ones as well as quiet time alone. The memorial embodies these complimentary desires in the form of a public plaza and a contemplative space that overlooks the crash site.. The victims all shared a love of flight and a deep connection to nature. Images of native birds and waterfowl express these themes and a connection to the river corridor. The memorial is located alongside the Greeway bike path. Softened by lush plantings and a water feature, the public plaza includes stone seating sited to maximize river views. A stone path leads from the water feature to a contemplative space nestled in a grove of trees. A line of poetry arcs across stone paving to a seat made from a cut river boulder. The curve of the text draws the visitor to a spot in front of the seat and a view overlooking the crash site to the mountains beyond.
