The inspiration for this form comes from the Milkweed plant (Asclepias Asperula) common to river bottoms. The pod is carved of Silverdale Limestone from Kansas. The stone is rich in texture and carves beautifully providing the opportunity for both smooth curves and interesting split faces. The limestone is earthy and finishes with a soft grain. A gentle spread of parasol seeds spiral up and out of the pod. These seeds provide a wider shimmering presence as they ascend toward the ceiling. The ethereal quality of the seeds is intended to contrast with the heavy and earthbound quality of the stone. The parasol seeds are made of cherry wood and bronze. The carved cherry has a smooth exterior and textured recess to echo the form of the stone. The wood adds a warm complement to the yellow of the limestone. The parasol fan is made of bronze with an antique patina. The vibrancy of the patina enlivens the stone.
