The problem presented to Artscapes at Westland Park was relatively functional. The site design required several hundred feet of 14-foot-high retaining walls, which could have been cold and overbearing. We chose to play on the changing history of the site, from cottonwood forest to present day. We designed a series of modular panels depicting stylized trees and wildlife, illustrated with texture and relief to add life to the necessary feature. We designed and constructed molds of oriented strand board and polystyrene, with latex, sandblasted plywood, and other materials for added texture. Each panel was designed so that 150 feet of wall could be poured at a time. Juxtaposition of the different panels was planned to create variety in the finished surface imagery. The Artscapes crew worked in collaboration with RBI Construction to install the panels prior to the concrete pours. The relief was finished by acid-staining select areas and sandblasting details.
