Client: University of Denver
The Kiva was the senior class gift to the University in 1997. Artscapes was chosen for this project because of our ability to collaborate on all phases of design and construction. Working closely with the students and campus architects, we developed this outdoor classroom made from massive snap-cut sandstone blocks. In the center of the space is a glyph of a hand and a spiral surrounded by a sunburst. The hand is a tracing of the senior class president's and signifies the senior's transition from the academic setting to the "hands on" responsibilities of adult life. The spiral is a timeless symbol that represents continuity and continuation. The sunburst signifies the importance of education and illumination. The students participated in both the design and the construction of this special place.
