Utah Park is an important community hub for this diverse Aurora neighborhood. The pool is a major source of fun and delight for people of all ages and cultures in this section of the city. This diversity and kinetic energy inspired us to develop an integrated plan of plaza design, sculptural seating, a gateway element and interior banners for this renovated public swimming facility. The scale and design of the gateway softened the massiveness of the pool building and transitioned from the architecture to the human scale of the plaza. On the winter solstice, the sculpture acts as a celestial object. The center shadow reaches north to touch the front door and signal the return of spring. The gateway also features nighttime lighting and a kinetic "beach ball" which spins in the wind.

We worked in collaboration with park staff to express the aquatic theme in the plaza paving and the "fish chairs" which were cast and assembled on site. Inside, whimsical banners suspended from the ceiling humanize the space and add an element of light and color.
